When Your Dwarf Frogs Arrive
Your Dwarf Frogs are completely aquatic, meaning they live entirely in the water all the time. They arrive in a transport bag that has both water and air.
To prepare the Habitat for the Dwarf Frogs, fill it around ¾ full of warm (not hot) tap water. Your Habitat holds 2 gallons of water. Read the instructions on the Water Treatment so you add the correct amount for 2 gallons of water. Add the Water Treatment solution into the water and stir. This step is very important because water can contain chemicals that are dangerous to Dwarf Frogs. Before putting the Dwarf Frogs in the Habitat, let the treated water sit for at least 2 hours. This allows the water to become the same temperature as the water in the Dwarf Frog‟s transport bag. After 2 hours, you can open the Dwarf Frogs bag and pour the entire contents into the Habitat. Don‟t be worried if there is no movement at first, it can take up to a day before the Dwarf Frog explores the Habitat. Place the floating plastic plant into the Habitat. The Dwarf Frog likes to occasionally sit in the plant leaves or nibble at algae that sometimes grows on the leaves. Keep the lid on the Habitat at all times to prevent an escape.

Important: Keep your Habitat at room temperature (65° to 78° F) and out of direct sunlight. Do not shake or tap on the Habitat, as this is stressful for the Dwarf Frogs.

Feeding Your Dwarf Frogs
The Dwarf Frogs may not eat the 1st day in the Habitat as they adjust to their new home. The Dwarf Frog is a „bottom feeder‟ and eats the sinking pelleted Frog Food included with the kit. Feed 1 pellet per frog, 2 times per week. Do not expect them to consume all the given food in one feeding. If by the next feeding some food is still left in the water, do not feed until it has been eaten, to avoid clouding the water too much. It is important not to overfeed the Dwarf Frogs because left over food will decay and having dirty water will harm them. If you run out of food or misplace it, Dwarf Frogs will eat sinking shrimp pellets from the local pet store.
If you purchased some ZebraFish for your Habitat, they will also happily eat the frog food from the bottom of the habitat.

Fun Dwarf Frog Experiments
Dwarf frogs will eat a wide variety of foods and it can be fun to experiment to see which your pet likes the best. As treats to supplement the main diet, they like chopped earthworms, live or frozen/thawed bloodworms, tubifex worms, dried krill and live brine shrimp.

Clean the Habitat at least Once a Week
Clean water is very important to the Dwarf Frog -most problems Dwarf Frogs have are caused by water that is not clean. Once a week, or more often if the water looks cloudy, change 1/3 of the Habitat water. To do this, first wash your hands and rinse them well to make sure you have no soap or lotion on your hands that can get into the Habitat when you scoop out the water. Remove the plants and any décor and rinse them with warm water in the sink. Then use the Cup to remove 1/3 of the water from the Habitat. Now fill a 1/2 gallon container with warm (not hot) tap water and add the Water Treatment solution. Let this treated water sit for 2 hours just like you did when you initially set up the Habitat. After 2 hours, you can add the water, plants and décor back into the Habitat.
More water conditioner is available at pet stores; you can use any water conditioner used to prepare water for fish. Important: Never use soap or other cleaners in your Habitat. The residue can hurt Dwarf Frogs. Do not remove any animals from the Habitat while cleaning.

Can I play with the Dwarf Frog?
No. A Dwarf Frog‟s skin is fragile and is easily damaged if handled improperly. A frog is delicate and may escape or be injured during handling. They will also dry out quickly which will injure or kill the frog.

What if I can no longer care for my Frog?
Please do not release the Frog into the wild. Your Frog may not know how to survive in the wild because it has not learned to hunt on its own. Some suggestions: find a friend or neighbor who would like a pet Frog, or donate it to a school for a wildlife display, or give it to a local pet shop who can possibly find it a home.

About Your Dwarf Frog:

  • These are African dwarf frogs. They are interesting little amphibians native to the tropics of Central Africa where they live in slow-moving fresh water.
  • They have lungs so while they live in the water; they have to come to the surface to breathe.
  • The adult size is 1-1.5 inches from snout to toes on outstretched legs.
  • Dwarf frogs have been reported to live up to 20 years or longer in captivity, but the average lifespan is about 4-8 years if properly cared for.
  • African dwarf frogs are not to be confused with African clawed frogs which are larger and do not get along well with fish.
  • Dwarf frogs like lots of hiding places. We‟ve included some plants for this. You can also purchase caves and hiding places on our website or any pet store aquarium décor department.
  • The “Zen Position”- a favorite posture of your aquatic dwarf frog! While they like to swim around a lot, they will also frequently strike this „pose‟: arms and legs spread out and often balancing on one foot as though meditating the deeper meanings of life. Sometimes when they feel extra lazy, they‟ll just float to the top. Don’t be alarmed if your frogs do this for a couple of hours—it often looks like they are dead but this is not the case.
  • Is my frog…singing? Male dwarf frogs will indeed sing or hum. It‟s hard to tell males and females apart besides the singing though.
  • They don‟t have extendible tongues like most frogs – instead they grab their food then use their front legs to push it into their mouth.
  • These frogs will sometimes shed their skin, making them appear “mossy” during the process.
