Description

Explore the amazing life cycle of your leopard frog tadpoles and watch them transform into croaking frogs. Your leopard frog tadpoles will go through several changes while their body develops during a 12-16 week period. The resulting healthy frogs can live for 5 years or more in proper habitat conditions.

An Easy Exercise for Beginners

Growing frogs from tadpoles is a fun animal-raising project for children and first timers. It is an excellent way to teach kids about responsibility and engage them with the natural world around them. Leopard frog tadpoles are easy to care for. They adapt well to most of the conditions that you can provide them in captivity. Growing them is a low-cost activity with plenty of fun.

There is no need for accessories such as heaters to help your tadpoles transform into healthy frogs. A room temperature of 65°F to 78°F works best. Their diet is also simple. You can feed them the tadpole food pellets that are included. When you run out of tadpole food, you can buy goldfish food from your local pet store. Your tadpoles will not make a fuss!

Learn More About Your Young Swimmers

Leopard frog tadpoles are nocturnal creatures. They will be active swimmers and float around the habitat unless startled. You can observe them every day and check their progress as they change into froglets and then into frogs. Their tails will shrink and legs will develop, with the back legs sprouting first.

Not only does their body change over time but their behavior also changes. This provides an excellent opportunity for children to learn about the frog life cycle. The practical experience of raising them and witnessing the changes helps kids understand the process of metamorphosis even better.

Gain a Ribbity Friend

Your young tadpoles will grow into healthy pet frogs in about 12-16 weeks. You can continue to take care of your pet frogs after their growing period and enjoy their company. While you cannot teach them tricks or take them for a walk, they will remain active throughout their life.

Adult leopard frogs can grow up to 5 inches in size. They appear slender green to brown in color with a pretty pattern of spots. You can offer your leopard frogs crickets or worms and watch them greedily relish their meal. Keep your adult frogs in a 10-gallon or bigger terrarium. This will allow them to swim comfortably and you will be also able to observe their antics easily.

Our granddaughter is enjoying watching the tadpole develop. She can now see it’s legs growing. Great science learning idea.

Unfortunately, the tadpoles didn’t make it. I love the idea, however, and would be willing to try growing them again. I must’ve done something wrong because I was in the middle of changing jobs and couldn’t pay much attention.

I absolutely love my leopard frogs. I have 2 in a 20 gallon long habitat that I recently remodeled and they love it. My 2 year old loves watching them especially when there are crickets running around lol.

I bought two tadpoles after my 4K class couldn’t stop talking about frogs after our non-fiction unit. The only thing I would suggest is that you order them in the fall if you are getting them for a classroom. They take 12-16 weeks to change, and we will be out of school before that. I love in Wisconsin so I couldnt order earlier because of the cold weather. My students can’t get enough of these tadpoles!!

Such a wonderful project! Our tadpole grew into the cutest little frog, ever! I do recommend switching to an aquarium with a filter, it will speed up their growth tremendously! See the video below!! ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

I bought the kit with two tadpoles back in March of 2019 for my Kindergarten classroom. We study lifecycles and my students love learning and watching tadpoles change into frogs. I followed the directions perfectly, I’m an animal lover no matter what type of creature. I wanted them to live and thrive. In July, the first tadpole died. He only grew his two back legs. Today, January 2, 2020, I still have Bob (students named him). He has never developed or changed. His tank is changed with chemical free water once a week (as directed). He is fed as directed the food that was sent with him/it. However, still no change and he is still alive!!! My students were very disappointed and the first time I contacted the company they gave me the same directions I was already following from the beginning. Basically, assuming it was my fault that the tadpole never changed. Obviously I am doing something right, because it is alive after 10 months.

The tadpoles came in alive and very healthy. They are very active. I also have a tadpole that I got back in October 2019 (6/2/20 as I’m writing this) and he didn’t grow legs. Months later I think I found out why, his water was too cold every time I changed it. So then I got a heater. Now I think I see little nub legs! If any one is reading this, please add a heater other wise the tadpole may not grow legs.

Love our Leopard frog, who developed from his tadpole stage the Summer of 2020 and is now full grown and actually makes interesting sounds during the nights. Also, he enjoys hiding out in his pretend tree trunk tunnel while hunting for live crickets.

My tadpole arrived today perfectly packaged and protected by styrofoam peanuts. On Earth Day 🌎 he’s doing well in his new home swimming around and hopefully adjusting to new surroundings. He’s also got company in there, another tadpole I purchased about 3 weeks ago.

I ordered two tadpoles and they arrived alive and well. One thing I would recommend to anyone buying tadpoles is adding “good bacteria” to the tank by using a product such as “Safe Start” (by Tetra) to prevent “new tank syndrom” which can kill your tadpoles in a couple weeks. It’s caused by the build up of ammonia and nitrite which is a byproduct of animal waste. This is one of the reasons they tell you to change the water every week. I use “Stability” (by Seachem) and add .5 ml per day. You should at a minimum add “good bacteria” any time you change or add water to your aquarium so your tadpoles don’t die from ammonia toxicity.

As a science teacher, I had the wonderful opportunity to have a real life survival of the fittest scenario play out with the tadpoles I purchased. One was not able to make it, while one is growing and developing well. It led to a fantastic conversation about what could have actually happened for this to occur. That discussion is something that no lesson I plan would ever be able to even come close to. While this could be something that I could be upset about, I know that there is a far greater science lesson to be learned here. I will absolutely purchase from this company again and again.

Very well! I change water more frequently than recommended – 1/3 every other day, plus added a couple of aquatic plants and gravel so they can have nice environment. They have been feeling well and are already growing legs! I have been having them for a month and a half now, would definitely buy again!

We had some issues with deceased tadpoles arriving which is really unfortunate after two attempts due to the July heat and distance. However, the team was very responsive and understanding and lived up to their guarantee both offering a second chance then a refund. I would 100% recommend them because that type of customer service is tough to find. I’ll try again with them in the late summer early fall when it’s cooler
