Dwarf Frog Kit

Welcome To Your Dwarf Frog Starter Kit Experience

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD — Small parts. Not for children under 3 years

Congratulations on your new pet African Dwarf Frogs!

These frogs are very fun and easy to keep. Your frogs are completely aquatic, so they live entirely in the water all the time.

About Your African Dwarf Frogs:

These interesting little amphibians are native to the tropics of Central Africa where they live in slow-moving fresh water.
They have lungs so while they live in the water they have to come to the surface to breathe.
Adults can grow up to 3 inches from snout to toes on outstretched legs.
Your frogs can live up to 5 years if properly cared for.
They like lots of hiding places and to rest on top of plants.
The “Zen Position” also called “burbling” is a favorite posture of your frog! While they like to swim around a lot they will also frequently strike this ‘pose’: arms and legs spread out and often balancing on one foot as though meditating the deeper meanings of life. Sometimes when they feel extra lazy they’ll just float to the top. Don’t be alarmed if your frogs do this for a couple of hours–it often looks like they are dead but this is not the case.
Is my frog…singing? Male dwarf frogs will indeed sing or hum. It’s hard to tell males and females apart besides the singing though.
They don’t have extendible tongues like most frogs – instead they grab their food then use their front legs to push it into their mouth.
These frogs will sometimes shed their skin, making them appear “mossy” during the process. READ MORE

When Your Frogs Arrive

First, fill a gallon container with tap water and treat it with water treatment solution per the directions on the bottle. This step is very important because tap water can contain chemicals that are dangerous to your frogs. Rinse your decor in the sink then add it to your tank. After your treated water sits for 2 hours to become room temperature, fill your tank leaving a 1 inch gap between the lid and the waterline. Now open the bag your frogs came in and pour the entire contents into your habitat. Don’t be worried if there is no movement at first, it can take up to a day before frogs feel comfortable exploring the habitat. Always keep the lid on your habitat to prevent an escape.

Important: Keep your habitat at room temperature (65 to 78 degrees F) and out of direct sunlight.  Do not shake or tap on the habitat as this is stressful for your frogs.

Feeding Your Frogs

It is normal for your frogs not to eat on their 1st day as they adjust to their new home. Your frogs eat the sinking food pellets included with the kit. Feed 5 pellets per frog, 2 times per week. Overfeeding can lead to poor water quality. If you run out of food or misplace it your frogs will eat sinking shrimp pellets from the local pet store. READ MORE

Fun Dwarf Frog Experiments

Dwarf frogs will eat a wide variety of foods, and it can be fun to experiment to see which your pet likes the best. Some treats to try as a supplement to their main diet are dried fly larvae, chopped earthworms, live or frozen/thawed bloodworms, tubifex worms, dried krill and live brine shrimp.

Clean the Habitat Weekly

Clean water is very important to your frogs. Most problems frogs have are caused by water that is not clean. Change 1/3 of the habitat water once a week even if the water appears clean. Keep the frogs in the habitat while cleaning. Adult supervision is required for water changes. First, fill a gallon container with tap water and treat it with water treatment solution. Let this water sit for 2 hours. Then wash your hands and rinse them well to make sure you have no soap or lotion on your hands that can get into the habitat when you scoop out the water because the residue can hurt the frogs. Use a cup (preferably disposable) to remove 1/3 of the water from the habitat and try to remove any uneaten food. We suggest pouring the dirty water into the toilet instead of a sink. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after changing the water. Now fill your tank with the treated water leaving a ½ inch gap between the lid and the waterline. You’re done! You can keep the extra treated water ready for your next water change.

Can I play with my Frogs?

No. A frog’s skin is fragile and is easily damaged if handled improperly. Frogs are delicate and may escape or be injured during handling. They will also dry out quickly which will injure the frogs.

What if I can no longer care for my Frogs?

Please do not release the frogs because they may not know how to survive in the wild. Some suggestions: find a friend or neighbor who would like pet frogs, donate them to a school for a wildlife display, or give them to a local pet shop who can possibly find them a home.

Dwarf Frog Kit FACTS:

Q: How long before I get my frogs?
A: If your kit came with a certificate for frogs you can mail, fax, or email it to us per the instructions. Allow 2 weeks for arrival.
Q: Can I order crabs during the winter?
A: We ship frogs year-round but only order if it is above 40 degrees in your area.
Q: A frog isn’t moving. Is it dead?
A: Probably not, it can take up to a day before he explores the habitat.
Q: My frogs were doing fine and then next day they are dead. What happened?
A: Your local pet shop carries these items.
Q: A crab is missing a leg. Will it be OK?
A: This is usually a water problem. If you accidentally introduced hand lotion or soap into the habitat during a water change, or forgot to add the water treatment to tap water, or overfed and have dirty water for too long then it will harm your frogs.
Q: Do I need a heater, filter or gravel in my habitat?
A: No – room temperature water is best, filters may take away the frog’s food or injure them if they are too strong and gravel makes water changes very hard and isn’t necessary.
Q: What if I run out of frog food or water treatment solution?
A: Your local pet shop carries these–frogs like sinking shrimp pellets and you can use any water treatment made for fish tanks that removes chlorine and neutralizes metals.
Q: Do you give a Guarantee?
A: Yes. We guarantee your frogs will arrive alive. After arrival we can no longer guarantee them as most problems with frogs come from improper water care.
